The winner of the Real Shetland Wool competition in the paper last month has been announced.

Helen Clark-Adams, of Swadlincote in Derbyshire, was judged to have submitted the best description of what the product means to her.

The runners-up were Nicola Robinson and Liz Fraser.

The question asked of entrants was: “What is Real Shetland Wool’s superpower?”

The winning answer:

Real Shetland Wool has, for me, the greatest superpower of all.  It is a transportation device, a magic carpet if you will.  During these strange, unsettling times we are living in I find myself taking comfort in items that seem to pull me closer to my family; a pair of socks knitted by my late Grandma, a Shetland wool jumper knitted by my Mum, a blanket that Mum and I knitted and crocheted between us.  All things of no financial value but huge sentimental value and irreplaceable.  Especially with family so far away, in fact they are geographically nearer to Shetland than to me!

Shetland wool tells a tale of its origin; the hardiness of the Shetland sheep and the awe inspiring islands they inhabit.  When I think of Real Shetland Wool and hold something skilfully crafted from it I am magically transported not only to my family but also to a place I have longed to visit.

Real Shetland Wool has the superpower to transport us to the place of our dreams, it gives hope and a vital reminder that the world is still there; waiting for us to emerge and start exploring once more.  What better superpower is there than that?
— Ms Clark-Adams

The judging was done by a professional website and online shop designer with no outside influence. Ms Clark-Adams will receive a Real Shetland Wool throw as her prize.

Runners-up

I think Shetland wools superpowers are from the fact the wool is stunning and durable. It lasts so long it can be passed down through the generations, a real treasure to own. It has great insulation properties and it puts itself out if set on fire. To me you can’t get greater than that.
— Nicola Robinson
I think Real Shetland Wool’s super power is the providence of the wool, the fact that all the wool used is provided by native Shetland sheep living on a beautiful island as they have done for thousands of years providing unique wool for the islanders to utilise.
— Liz Fraser

On behalf of Martin Curtis and the ACO team, we would like to thank all the entrants for taking the time to submit their wonderful answers, everyone who shared this competition on social media and especially The Shetland Times for their kind support.
